Special Food of Swahili Coast

Zanzibar's cuisine is a delightful fusion of Swahili, Indian, Arab, and Persian influences. Some must-try dishes include:

Zanzibar Pizza

A legendary street food dish that is completely different from traditional Italian pizza. Closer to stuffed crepe, the dough is rolled paper-thin, packed with savory or sweet fillings.

Makai Paka

Makai translates to "corn/maize" in Kiswahili, and Paka refers to a coconut-based curry. Makai Paka is a popular East African-Indian fusion dish, rooted in Swahili and Gujarati-Kenyan cuisine. Sweet corn simmered in a rich, spiced, and creamy coconut milk curry.

Grilled Snapper

White Snapper or "Changu" in Swahili is a clean, mildly sweet meat with a delicate flavor profile. Enjoy a fresh and delicious grilled whole snapper paired with your favorite beer or wine.

Makange with Ugali

Makange with Ugali is the national dish of Tanzania. Makange is a thick stew sauce coated in spices, onions, garlic, and pepper prepared with meat or fish. Ugali is a hearty and filling stiff porridge made from maize (corn flour) and eaten by hand.
